Itinerary

Day 1

London – Havana

Arrive in Havana in the afternoon from London, where there will be a short 40 minute transfer to the hotel. Stay overnight and during the evening meal, learn more about the challenge ahead.

Day 2

Havana – Bay of Pigs – Yaguaramos

45km approx.

Terrain: Mainly flat off-road with some undulations towards Cienfuegos.
The challenge begins with a transfer (3hrs) to the Playa Giron located on the eastern side of the Bay of Pigs in the province of Matanzas. Here, you will have a bike fitting and lunch before the cycle commences. The cycle is mainly off-road through Zapata Peninsula National Park, which has been left predominantly wild and unspoilt, apart from a few small villages, so it is a great place to get a feel for rural Cuban nature and the surrounding foliage is lush and fertile. The route winds along the coast towards the province of Cienfuegos, an area best known as the site of the historic battle between Fulgencio Batista and Che Guevara’s guerrillas. The cycle concludes at Yaguaramos, where you will take a coach transfer to the hotel in the centre of Cienfuegos.

Day 3

Cienfuegos – Trinidad

89km approx.

Terrain: Hilly start and end, gentle undulations for most of the day.
The day begins with cycling along a rising and falling coastal road, followed by some short sharp hills through beautiful pasture lands. About 20km along the route, you will be rewarded with some stunning views of the Escambray mountain, and its steep peaks and natural vegetation promises to be striking. Cycle up and over gentle hills until you reach the coast again just beyond Guajimico. Lunch at 50km at La Vega farm restaurant. Afterwards, follow a flat road for 30km which follows the coastline all the way to Trinidad, however, there will be a few hillier sections at the end of the day.

Day 4

Trinidad

48km approx.

Terrain: Gentle hills.
The focus of today’s cycle will be the areas in and around Trinidad. Leaving straight from the hotel, you will be taken straight through town and along the coast towards the outskirts of Trinidad. Cycle through La Boca and stop at the beachside bar for a short break. Afterwards, continuing along the Caribbean coast before turning back towards Trinidad through some small villages. There is also a possibility, time permitting, of visiting La Torre de Manaca Iznaga, an old colonial sugar plantation. After cycling back to the hotel and lunch, there will be a tour of Trinidad, the “museum town” that was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.

Day 5

Topes de Collantes – Santa Clara

86km approx.

Terrain: First 10km is steep uphill, then sweeping downhill to Santa Clara and gentle hills.
An initial transfer to the day is followed by a tough 10km uphill section over mountainous peaks before descending to Santa Clara. Enjoy the spectacular views of palm trees and tropical plants replacing the pine trees as you cycle along the valley floor between impressive mountains before reaching the foothills and pastures around Santa Clara. A chance to see the monuments commemorating Cuba’s history including a group picture with the legendary Che Guevara.

Day 6

Santa Clara – Cienfuegos

80km approx.

Terrain: Flat with the occasional gentle undulation.
A quiet traffic free route towards the Province of Cienfuegos (33km) will take you through field after field of sugar cane with a few houses. The final stretch of the cycle will take you straight through this beautiful Caribbean town onto the sea front (Malecon), to enjoy the beautiful views across the Bay of Cienfuegos, the final destination. Here, there will be a celebratory cocktail and buffet lunch and at the same time you will return your bikes. A three hour transfer to Havana to have dinner and stay overnight.

Day 7

Havana

Havana, as one of the oldest cities in the Americas, is a delightful city with winding streets, spacious plaza and glorious Spanish architecture. And with a free day, you can either explore Havana independently or as part of a half day tour. Perhaps you’ll meet some Habaneros, the locals! This optional tour will take you round Plaza San Francisco, Plaza de Armas and Plaza de la Catedral, followed by some free time for shopping, a visit to Revolution Square and lunch.

Day 8

Havana

Another free morning, with the option of staying at the hotel or exploring Havana independently again. Back at the hotel for an early afternoon transfer (30 – 40mins) to Havana Airport, for the return flight to London. Lunch is not included today.
