Itinerary

Day 1

Depart

Flight from London Heathrow to Beijing

Day 2

Beijing

Transfer to our overnight accommodation at the Qi Hu Hotel. The rest of the day is free to acclimatise.

Day 3

Great Wall at Mutianyu

3-4 hours trekking approx.

Today we set off up Trout Valley where we catch our first views of the Great Wall of China. Once on the Wall the views are absolutely stunning. We then trek along the Wall climbing to the highest restored watch tower in this section. Descent from the Wall is either by a mile-long toboggan, by cable car or half an hour on foot.

Day 4

Black Dragon Paw Park

6-7 hours trekking approx.

Today we begin trekking up a shallow valley to a small Chinese settlement, before reaching Black Dragon Paw Park. After lunch we head uphill through heavy undergrowth until we arrive at the tallest single tower on this section of the Wall. After decent we transfer to the Simatai Lodge, traditional Chinese style accommodation

Day 5

Great Wall at Gubeikou

5-6 hours trekking approx

We transfer to the village of Gubeikou. This is one of the most striking sections of the entire Wall, where some sections date back to the Ming Dynasty and are un-restored. Today it is one of the least visited parts of the Wall in the Beijing area.

Day 6

Great Wall at Jinshanling

6-7 hours trekking approx.

We set off towards the Great Wall at Jinshanling. It has some unusual features such as “obstacle walls” which are walls within walls used for defending against enemies who had already scaled the Wall. The highest point is about 700 metres above sea level and the views and scenery are incredible.

Day 7

Great Wall at Simatai

4 hours trekking approx.

Today we trek the Great Wall at Simatai, which boasts some 135 watchtowers. We trek on the Wall itself and climb more than 1200 steps. After lunch we head back to the Simatai Hotel to celebrate the end of the trek before transferring to the Rainbow Hotel in Beijing. After dining together there will be an optional foot massage to ease those aching limbs.

Day 8

Beijing

Free day to explore Beijing. Tonight we enjoy the celebration dinner.

Day 9

Beijing – London

This morning we visit a Chinese school for deaf children. Afterwards there will be more time to explore Beijing, particularly the Forbidden City and Silk Market. Our return flight to London does not leave until late evening.
