Trek China

Alison Lewis

The trip was just so wonderful, although hard work - but the enthusiam and spirit from fellow trekkers and especially the tour leaders was inspirational!

Alison's Trek China Story

View from watchtower

I decided to celebrate my 40th birthday spectactularly by celebrating not just on the actual birthday, but throughout the year. I thought about how I would do this and having heard from friends who have done NDCS challenges, I decided I would do one myself to mark my 40th birthday and at the same time raise awareness and funds for the NDCS. I signed up in October 2003 and almost immediately went about fundraising. I waived my Christmas presents for sponsoship from friends and family, and again for my birthday, raising about £1200.

Being the only deaf person on the trek and travelling alone, I felt slightly nervous but everyone was so kind and always ensured that I was involved and knew what was happening. I felt safer than in London!

A lasting impression...

It was a wonderful experience for me, and to have such a fantastic trip and at the same time raise funds for deaf children was something I will never forget.

I firmly recommend it and hope to do another in the not too distant future.
